Pirates 1 – Hollywood 0, Serenity HD-DVD rip download now available

The day has finally come. We knew it was just a question of time. Afterall there are very few copy protection schemes out there that have remained unbroken.

The first rip of a protected HD-DVD (other rips of HD-DVD have been out for a while, but they weren’t protected in the first place) has made its way onto Bit Torrent and other P2P sites. It does beg the question why Hollywood even bother ;) Some more thoughtful comments to follow…

Apple iPhone and TV – initial thoughts

Apple TV

Pro:

  • small
  • no power supply/brick like the Xbox360
  • compatible with PC and Mac OSX
  • 720p output (High Definition)
  • Con:

  • no black version
  • no analogue output because Hollywood won’t let them… effectively making this device useless to people with normal TVs
  • no 1080p output
  • requires iTunes to work properly
  • £199 for a box that quite frankly just plays back content, Xbox Media Centre is a far better, more feature rich and cheaper (unfortunately requires xbox modding though), there are however other alternatives
  • only allows you to play movies available via the iTunes shop or accessible via iTunes, to my knowledge this includes home made movies, divx, xvid, etc.
  • iPhone

    Pro:

  • beautifully thought out UI
  • wifi connectivity (bluetooth too, but that’s expected these days)
  • nice design
  • high resolution screen
  • compatible with Windows and OSX
  • Con:

  • requires iTunes
  • too big to run with
  • battery? can you replace it?
  • no 3rd party apps

    Simon’s first blog entry…

… and probably his last :)

He’s an old boss of mine at Reuters and occasionally has some witty stuff to say.

Motorcycle around the world – a la Ewan McGregor et Charley Boorman

Some guy is looking for bikers to join them on a trip around the world… a la Ewan and Charley.

So I’m sitting here asking myself… why don’t I join them!?!?!?

    Motorcycling in Iran

I found this interesting account of a couple motorcycling in Iran on the HorizonsUnlimited website today. Reading it makes me want to hop on a BMW 1200GS and disappear for a long long time…

Video commercial for “The Bastard Fairies”

The girl is actually an actress just reading lines… good though :)

Trust the americans to turn it into something it’s not! I can’t quite see how this could be considered child abuse. It’s not as if she’s been tought any new words she doesn’t already know :) Naturally if I was a father I may see it differently.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjc9g1-4ytI

To tough it or not… that is the question!

I’m considering entering the Tough Guy competition next January (07). After having run a fun 8 miles at last week’s Grim Challenge, I’m longing for more.

I can’t quite work out if its my current state of madness or if it is genuinely a good idea. Running 10-12 miles cross-country with ‘dangerous’ obstacles can’t be a good idea, no matter what your mental state :).

www.toughguy.co.uk will give you a better idea of what to expect if you do enter it. My favourite obstacle at the moment is ‘The Behemoth’.

At £80 its not exactly cheap either!

Kid Beyond – the amazing one man group/band/DJ set

Feeling pretty shitty at the moment, but this guy cheered me up no end. Thanks to Lee Stranhan for the tip.
